Free sunflower hand embroidery tutorial for beginners

This sunflower design by Donggam Embroidery is a great way to practice some of the most popular textured stitches. The project uses the woven picot stitch to build the petals, which gives them a dimensional, 3D effect that sits right off the fabric. It’s a rewarding technique for beginners because it makes the flower look much more complex than it actually is to stitch.

To round out the design, you’ll use the outline stitch for a clean stem and the satin stitch to create smooth, solid leaves. The center of the sunflower is filled with French knots, which perfectly mimic the textured look of seeds. Practice these four stitches on a scrap piece of fabric first to get your tension right. Once you’re comfortable, you can move on to the main design and create a vibrant, high-impact piece of floral art.
